Spring Quarter!

It's finally here! Spring quarter officially started today! Had 3 out of the 4 classes I'm enrolled in. So far so good! Biological Anthropology looks to be promising, bowling DEFINITELY looks to be a blast, and English is going to be fantastic because it's an Intro to Literature course. The lady who teaches it is head of the English department, and I actually "interviewed" her back in fall quarter about all the requirements needed to become an English teacher! She's super nice, and her, shall we say abundant?, love of literature is sure to make it a great class!

The weather today has been wild. When I woke up, it was suuuuper cold and suuuuper foggy. Then it got warm and sunny for a bit. And just a minute ago it was raining/hailing SUPER hard! Now I think it's just raining. Gotta love that Washington weather...

The rest of today will be spent cleaning my room. I've only been back since Sunday afternoon and my desk is already a disaster! Sheesh...

Back in Ellensburg! Most everyone I know is coming back tomorrow, so I'm just chilling in my room crocheting a new hat. Maybe I'll make some rice soon. OR quinoa! It's so yummy, basically like rice except better for you or something. Either way, it's delicious and I think I'm going to make some!

final grades

My teachers finally posted all the final grades, and I got a B in Anthropology, a B in English, a B+ in IT and an A in Psychology! So my GPA for this quarter is 3.3 or something like that! I can't wait for next quarter to start.

The last couple days I've been on Vashon hanging out with Loren and his family for a bit. Later today I'm going to get a haircut and then tomorrow I'm going to see my dad and stepmom for lunch and then I'll probably go back to school tomorrow! Classes don't start until Tuesday, but I want to go back a little earlier than that.

Woot!

Alright, well so far only 2 out of my 4 teachers have posted the final grades. In English I got a B, and in that stupid IT computer class I got a B+! So now all I'm waiting on is Anthropology and Psychology. I know I have at least a B in Anthro and an A in Psych, so grades for this quarter turned out alright I'd say!

sunny!

It's so sunny and warm on the west side of the mountains! Today I played with Sunny in the river, and now he's pretty sleepy. Hopefully he wakes up enough to go on another hike up Rattlesnake Ridge in a bit. This time I think I'm going to go up farther than I did last time.

Spring Break! Holllaaaaa

So yesterday I finished my last final and am now at home for Spring Break! It's really nice to not have homework or reading to think about!

Tuesday night Loren and I watched the 80's movie Killer Klowns From Outerspace. Loren thought it was funny, I thought it was one of the scariest clown movies I've ever seen. They're just so creepy and ugly and gross and apparently according to Hollywood, they all want to eat people. So I think I'll just stay away from any and all clowns.

After we watched the movie, we went on a 4 mile run up to the water tower and then down the backside of the hill and then down a sketchy road with Rose and Nathan. It was really fun because it was 10 at night and so it was all dark out. Me and Loren ran in Vibrams which was really fun. I enjoyed it because when you're running in those shoes you really have to pay attention to where you're stepping which really helps me focus on what I'm doing rather than focusing on the fact that I can't breathe or that my legs are on fire.

Today mom and I are probably going to hike up to Rattlesnake Lake. Apparently it's a 2 mile hike. I've never done it before, but everyone who has says it's awesome so sounds like a good plan to me!

Done with my paper!

I'm finally finished!

Barefoot Running: The Biggest Debate You’ve Never Heard Of

It’s fairly safe to assume that as children we ran everywhere. We ran to our friend’s house, we ran in the backyard, we ran while playing games, and some of us – to the frustration of our mothers – ran in the parking lot. So why did so many of us stop enjoying running? For many, injuries could be the cause. To stop injuries, lots of people buy the most expensive running shoes they can find, or the most cushioned, or the ones with the most arch support. However, they continue to get injured. Which leads to the question, should humans even be running at all? Studies have been done that show that biologically we evolved to run. However back in our days as evolving Homo sapiens, we didn’t have the advanced running shoes with more arch support and cushioning than anyone could ask for. This leads some scientists to believe that running barefoot is the way to go. Others argue that barefoot running has its drawbacks, and can create more injuries than it solves. While some may think more cushioning in shoes is better for you and that running barefoot can be harmful, running barefoot or in minimalist style shoes actually will reduce injury, build strength, and allow us to run the way we evolved to.

Those who oppose the idea of barefoot running say that it can create more injuries. Sports podiatrist-biomechanist, Kevin Kirby, says “I worry that barefoot running is going to produce injuries, such as puncture wounds, infections, and even lacerations of vital structures at the bottom of the foot” (Burfoot). Kirby has a point. It is true that in our society today there are a lot of harmful things on the ground such as nails or glass. But getting cut from glass or stepping on a nail isn’t purely a running related injury. A cut from glass or nails could happen even if you weren’t running. A great way to go essentially barefoot while still having a layer of protection on your feet is by wearing minimalist shoes. Minimalist shoes can prevent injuries from things like glass or nails or sharp rocks. They are basically like gloves for feet. They have thin rubber soles to provide protection, but have no cushioning or support, making them the closest thing to running barefoot you can get without actually being barefoot.

Other injuries that can occur with barefoot running or minimal shoe wear running are calf and Achilles tendon injuries. However these injuries most often occur with overzealousness. Daniel Lieberman, a professor at Harvard’s human evolutionary biology department and a prominent researcher in the barefoot running debate, says that barefoot running is something to be eased into because it uses muscles that don’t get much use in shoed running and overworking those muscles will lead to strains (Hersher). Another argument that challengers of barefoot running come up with is that running barefoot on hard surfaces such as concrete or cobblestones would create injuries due to the impact directly on your feet. However, if a runner is running barefoot, the feet are able to detect and send back feedback when something is painful, allowing the runner to change his or her running form quickly. Bending the knees more and landing on the springy balls of the feet help dissipate shock from landing on a hard surface.

To the general public, having more cushioning in shoes makes sense. When running, the impact of our body weight on the ground sends shock up our leg, and if the shoes have more padding, then our legs won’t suffer as much, right? Not exactly. The excess padding gets in the way of allowing our feet to function the way they’re supposed to. Our feet constantly give us feedback. If we step on something sharp, our hurt foot tells our leg to step in a way that minimizes pain. If we’re running in cushioned shoes, the feedback is taken away. This can cause injuries because the cushioning and arch support in shoes gives our brains a false sense of comfort and allows us to have poor running form until severe injury occurs. Injuries can range anywhere from pulled muscles in legs all the way to back and shoulder problems.
Many people in the fitness world are asking, why run barefoot? What it really all boils down to is running form. The most referred to study in this debate was done recently by Dan Lieberman. Lieberman’s study on running focused on groups of runners from the United States and from Kenya. In the study, Lieberman watched the running form of three groups: people who had always ran wearing shoes, people who had always ran barefoot, and people who had ran in shoes but had switched over to running barefoot. In his study, Lieberman found that those who ran in shoes landed on their heels with each step, whereas the barefoot runners landed on the middle or front of their feet (Hersher). In another experiment done by Lieberman and his colleagues, he used a force plate to accurately measure force from running. The researchers found that the force in runners who land on the front of their foot is only a third of the force of heel-strikers (Sanders). As Lieberman said in Sanders’ article, “A rear-foot strike is like someone hitting you on the foot with a hammer with about one and a half to three times your body weight… A forefoot strike is like having no one hit you at all.” Heel-striking in cushioned shoes doesn’t hurt because the cushioning helps to absorb some of the force. However, landing each step on your heel with a straight leg sends the unabsorbed shock up your leg, jarring the knees, hips, and back. If a runner tried to heel-strike barefoot or in minimalist shoes, they would realize this and change their form to land on the front of their foot, minimizing injuries.

Not only does running barefoot help form, it also increases strength. In cushioned shoes, our feet don’t have to do as much work. This makes the muscles in our feet atrophy and become weak which can lead to injuries. Cushioned shoes also make the ankles weak, which can be very dangerous when playing sports or even just walking. With weak ankles, the risk of rolling or spraining an ankle is heightened. Running barefoot strengthens the muscles in the arches of the foot, as well as in the ankles. Barefoot running also uses calf muscles that running in shoes doesn’t use. As Lieberman says, “If you’ve been a heel-striker all your life, you have to transition slowly to build strength in your calf and foot muscles” (Hersher). Running barefoot can also increase speed. With heavy cushioned running shoes on, the legs are bogged down which can make running feel more like a chore than a fun thing to do. At Stanford University in 2001, a couple Nike representatives were watching the track team practice in order to get feedback on what shoes the team liked best. However, the track coach, Vin Lannana, found that his runners ran “faster and with fewer injuries” without any shoes at all(MacDougall). The heavy shoes often get in the way of running fast.

If we look at running from an evolutionary viewpoint it becomes apparent that we evolved to run. Dennis Bramble, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Utah, had a star student named David Carrier. Carrier looked at bones of animals and in order to find out if we were made to run. He proposed his idea to Bramble, who began to compare running and walking animals. Running animals include things like horses and dogs, whereas walking animals include pigs and chimps. Bramble found that we have a lot more in common with the running animals than we do with the walkers. He found that we have an Achilles tendon, chimps don’t. Achilles tendons are needed for running, but not for walking. He also looked at feet. Ours have short toes and high arches which are better for running, whereas chimps have flat feet and long toes which are more suited for walking. The big thing that Bramble found though was the presence of a nuchal ligament, which is a tendon behind the head. The nuchal ligament is used for stabilizing the head in fast-moving animals. Chimps and pigs don’t have one, but the running animals, including humans, do (MacDougall 215-20). Humans were built to run, and for years people have done so without injury. It wasn’t until the mass production of expensive running shoes that people started getting hurt. Our bodies have natural mechanisms that allow us to keep going, mechanisms such as springy legs and feet. We don’t need any extra cushioning, because it is all built in.

While studies are still being done today and theories are still being tested, it’s hard to ignore the evidence of the benefits of barefoot running. It can improve strength by giving muscles the chance to work, and reduce injury by increasing muscle strength. Running barefoot can also make you feel more in tune with the earth you’re running on, if you’re into that sort of thing. It can be a very freeing feeling, and makes running feel like fun again, as opposed to it feeling like a chore. So whether you’re trying to get rid of some old injuries, or maybe if you just want to feel like a kid again, try going barefoot more often. Perhaps not all the time, but even if it’s just for a little bit each day, the muscles in your feet will thank you.

Almost done!

I'm almost done with my English paper that's due tomorrow! My professor decided to make us hand in highlighted copies of all the sources we used which is a hugenormous waste of paper and a pain. So later today I have to go to the library and photocopy pages out of a couple books and print about 23958237583476 pages. yaaaaay.

Tomorrow is my optional psychology final. If you're happy with your current grade in the class, then you don't have to take the final, so I'm not taking it because I already have an A! So tomorrow I just have to turn in my English paper and then I'll be done for the day. Then Wednesday at noon I have my Anthropology exam, and then after that it's Spring Break!

I can't wait for Spring Quarter to start

studystudystudy

It's nice and sunny out, but I have been inside all day working on my final English paper and trying to study for Anthropology. Maybe I should think about eating something other than Starbursts.

All the fun of the day is going to come later tonight when a group of friends and I go for a nighttime stroll and then go back to Kara's dorm to play Apples to Apples and card games and perhaps watch a movie! And then tomorrow it will be back to studying.

I think I'll go down to the store that's connected to my dorm and buy some macaroni to make in my rice cooker. I did that the other day and although it was made without milk and butter it still tasted delicious to me!

OH, I'm super excited about my final English paper, because guess what I'm writing it on. Barefoot running! We could pretty much choose anything we wanted, and since I've already been looking up so much about barefoot running anyway I decided it would make a good topic. So far I've finished my outline for the paper and it's looking pretty good so far. Just have to stretch it out enough to make it a 5 page paper. 5 pages. About running. I think I can do it, hopefully without getting too repetitive.

In class last week we went around in a circle and told the class about our topics. There were 6 people (in a 25 person class) who are writing their papers on marijuana, I thought that was pretty funny. Everyone else was doing controversial, political, serious topics and then it came to be my turn to talk and it was just really funny. All the other people were blabbing about gay marriage, death penalty, immigration, marijuana legalization, and what do I talk about? Running. Haha it felt like a scene from an indie movie or something.

blahblahblah

The weather has gone back to it's default setting, sunny and deceiving. I almost wore a dress yesterday and was glad that I didn't the second I stepped outside because it may be sunny, but man, it's FREEZING.

Besides going to classes I don't feel like I've done anything this week so far. Except for today I tried out a new ab workout I found on one of my frequently visited websites, but other than that, this week has been pretty blah. Tomorrow morning I WILL get up and run. I will I will I will.

Last night Kara, Nathan, Loren, Rose, and I watched American History X. I really liked it. It's pretty depressing, but most great movies are depressing so I guess it just goes along with all that.

Just now realizing there's still little bits of glass stuck in my yoga mat from a while ago when I broke a glass water bottle in my room trying to throw it to Loren. Not entirely sure how to get the glass out of the mat.

Textbook buyback started today! Kara gave back 3 books and got 100 bucks from it. I have so many books, I really got to get on that buyback thing. I'm planning on taking some of them back tomorrow morning. Hopefully I can get some money out of it.

Blah

Well today has been super boring, especially compared to the adventures of yesterday, but I suppose that's the way the world works.

Capture the flag last night was SO fun! I hadn't played since probably middle school so it was like a blast from the past. The boundaries pretty much took up half the campus, so we had to play really quietly since we were playing around dorms and it was past quiet hours. Playing at night is so fun because we were all wearing black so we would sneak around in the shadows and it was really cool.

Today I did nothing. I got up late, sat in my room, did a lot of homework, am still doing homework, and Loren is going to come over to get some help with the psychology homework. He doesn't have a book so he borrows mine.

Tomorrow marks the beginning of the last week of winter quarter classes! Then after this week is finals and then Spring break and then spring classes. Can't wait. Not too worried about finals, they're never really as hard as everyone seems to make them out to be.

SUN!

Today has been fantastic, the weather is amazing and warm and I have my window open and for the first time since September it's actually making my room warmer instead of colder!

So this morning Loren and I got up and ran to the water tower, thus confirming what I already knew: boyfriend and girlfriend should not run together unless girlfriend is a superfreak runner. Otherwise, it just doesn't work. But anyway, that was great and all. When we got to the top we were so numb and cold we ran right back down.

Then I had lunch with Kara and Nathan, but then Nathan and Loren left to go to their highschool's state basketball game in Yakima so Kara and I walked to town, did a little shopping and got some ice cream! Then when we got back we sat and watched some people play ultimate frisbee on the lawn, and then I joined in for a little bit.

Tonight at 10 the ultimate frisbee peeps are getting a game of capture the flag going, so that should be fun! Ahhhh I love weekends :)

Sunny!

It is so sunny and warm outside today, and it's supposed to be even nicer tomorrow! Can't wait!

This morning I got up pretty early and went and ran 2 miles on the indoor track with no shoes on since I don't have Loren's shoes yet and I can't stand running in my running shoes anymore. Twas enjoyable, I'm contemplating running up to the water tower and back, which would be another 3 miles, but I might not because I have a monster headache.

I bought the hiking book that I was talking about earlier! The hikes are pretty cool, but the narration is done by some super pessimistic environmentalist guy who complains about how things aren't the way they used to be and how people are ruining all the trails and wildlife. Kinda silly. Oh really, buddy? How come you wrote a hiking book then?

Sick. Ugh..

So last week my friend Nathan was sick, and apparently he got me sick, because starting Friday I've been having all the same sickness as he had. Sore throat, stuffy nose, stuffy head, headaches, chills, achey muscles, all that fun stuff.

I'm feeling much better now, although I still have the headache and the stuffy nose. Sore throat only when I wake up, then it wears off as the day goes on.

This weekend I went home to stay with my dad so we could do FAFSA. That thing is just a never ending headache. But it was fun at least to go and see them. On Saturday night we went to the SPU vs CWU womens basketball game. CWU lost pretty bad, but that's ok because basketball is a stupid sport anyway.

When we got back to school on Sunday night I bought some Nyquil to take, and Loren decided he'd take some too. He took 4 pills when on the box it says you should only take 2, and it was really messing with him. He kept waking up in the middle of the night to look at the clock because he thought it was 9 in the morning when really it was like 2.

Loren got his new pair of Vibrams today! They're super cool and new and nice and don't smell bad like his other ones which I will now be using until I can get a pair. Probably not going to be any running this week since my nose is so stuffy and my head hurts, which is pretty disappointing because I really want to be running.

I have an English paper due tomorrow that I haven't started yet, so I'd better get going on that. 9 o clock classes, what was I thinking??? Haha :)
